What to send your website vendor.

You don't correct the website yourself. The company that built it does. This page is the note to send them. It asks for the 5 changes a scan finds on most eye care websites, with the WCAG number and the time for each. Nobody can say the request is vague.

How to use this page

Copy the note below into an email to whoever looks after your website. That can be Roya, EyeCarePro, an agency, or a person you know. Fill in the 2 bracketed parts. Send it.

Each change is 1 attribute or 1 line of text. Most of them are one change in a page template, and the template change corrects every page that uses it. The whole list is usually less than a day of work.

To keep this page, print it and save it as a PDF. The copy button does not print.

Subject: 5 changes to our website

Hello [name],

A screen reader cannot use some parts of our website. I want these 5 changes made on every page. Please make them and tell me when each one is done.

  1. Links with no text. Some links are an icon only, so a screen reader reads them as "link" and nothing else. Put text in each link. If the icon must stay, add an aria-label to the link that says where it goes. WCAG 2.4.4 and 4.1.2, Level A.
  2. Buttons with no name. Menu buttons, close buttons, and slider arrows that show an icon only. Put text in the button, or add an aria-label that says what the button does. WCAG 4.1.2, Level A.
  3. Images with no alt text. Add an alt attribute to every image. Write what the image shows. If an image is decoration only, write alt="". WCAG 1.1.1, Level A.
  4. Form fields with no label. On [the page with the form]. Add a label element for each field, with a for attribute that points at the id of the field. A placeholder is not a label. WCAG 4.1.2, Level A.
  5. Frames with no title. The map, the booking widget, and a video are each in an iframe. Add a title attribute to each iframe that says what it holds, for example "Appointment booking". WCAG 4.1.2, Level A.

Most of these are one change in a page template, and the template change corrects every page that uses it. The whole list is usually less than a day of work. If it is more, tell me which item takes the time and why.

When you are done, put each page into wave.webaim.org. The red icons for these 5 items must be gone. Send me the date you expect to finish.

Thank you,
[your name]

What each change takes

The time a developer needs for each item
The changeWhat a patient meets without itThe time
Text or an aria-label on each icon linkThe screen reader says "link, link, link". The patient cannot find the link that books an appointment5 minutes for each different link. Header and footer icons are the same on every page, so 20 instances are usually 30 minutes
Text or an aria-label on each icon buttonThe screen reader says "button" and nothing else. The patient does not know what it does5 minutes for each button
An alt attribute on each imageThe screen reader says "image", or reads the file name. A patient with low vision gets nothing from a photo of the frames2 to 5 minutes for each image. Template images are one change
A label element on each form fieldThe screen reader says "edit text". The patient cannot tell which field is the date of birth, and most stop15 to 30 minutes for each form
A title attribute on each iframeThe screen reader announces no name for the frame. The patient is inside it and does not know what it holds2 minutes for each iframe

The times come from our own corrections of these items. A rebuild is not on the list.

If the vendor pushes back

"Our accessibility widget handles this."

It does not. A widget adds a script on top of the page. It does not add a label to a field or text to a link, and a scan with the widget on still finds them. The FTC fined accessiBe 1 million dollars in 2025 for claims of this kind.

"That is inside the booking widget, not our code."

Partly true. The iframe element is theirs and takes 2 minutes. The content inside it belongs to the booking company. Ask your vendor to send item 4 to that company.

"That is how the template works."

Then change the template. One change there corrects every page.

"This will take 40 hours."

Ask which item. The 5 items above are attributes and short text, and the table gives the time for each. A rebuild is not on the list.

After the change, one check you can do

Put the page into wave.webaim.org. It is free, it takes 15 seconds, and it is not our tool. If the red icons are gone, the 5 items are done.

A scan finds about a third of the barriers on a website. A person finds the rest, and that is what we do. The count behind this note is in the study.
